Understanding the Renovation Building Process

Planning building work can be exciting, but many homeowners aren’t sure where to begin. Understanding the building process helps reduce delays, unexpected costs and unnecessary stress.

Whether you’re planning a renovation, extension or structural upgrade, knowing the key stages makes the experience much smoother. Here is a simple guide to how a typical residential building project works.

Step 1 - Initial Idea

You might have an idea, sketches or inspiration. At this stage, the more information you can provide to us, the better we can understand your vision.

We can help you assess feasibility, provide ballpark figures or preliminary costs and guide you on the next steps.

Step 2 - Design And Drawings

A designer, architect or draftsperson prepares your plans.

We’ve worked with a number of trusted partners and we can recommend the right people for your project and help guide the design in a practical direction.

These drawings are essential before we can provide you with accurate pricing and required approvals to proceed.

Step 3 - Engineering

If structural work is involved, an engineer provides the required design and certification.

This is typically where we begin detailed costing.

Step 4 - Approval

Plans are submitted to a certifier or council for approval if required.

We have strong working relationships with certifiers and engineers and we can help streamline the process to ensure everything is compliant before construction begins.

Step 5 - Quoting And Contract

Once drawings and approvals are in place and you are happy with your plans, we move into final pricing and contract.

Preliminary Agreement (if required)

For some projects, a preliminary agreement is used to investigate site conditions (services, soil, drainage), review buildability and refine scope and costs.

For these projects, this stage can help avoid unknowns before committing to a full contract.

Final Quote And Contract

Once all details are confirmed we provide a detailed quote, a clear scope of works and contract documentation.

The detail in this documentation ensures transparency, clarity and confidence before construction begins.

Step 6 - Construction

Once the contract is in place, construction begins.

During this stage, we are busy working on site. We also focus on regular updates, budget tracking and quality control.

Throughout construction you’ll be continually updated on how your project is progressing and you will be guided through any decisions that need to be made along the way.

Step 7 -  Completion

When the construction phase is finished, final inspections are completed and certification is issued. Then it’s time to enjoy your new space.
