Can You Live In The Home While Renovating?

A big question many homeowners ask is whether they can stay living in their home during a renovation.

The answer to this really depends on the type of project, how extensive the work is, and how comfortable you are with disruption. Every renovation is different, but understanding what to expect can help you make the right decision early.

When You Can Stay in Your Home

In some cases, it is absolutely possible to remain living in your home.

This is more common when work is isolated to one area of the house, essential spaces like bathrooms and kitchens remain functional and/ or the project is staged to minimise disruption.

For smaller renovations or well-planned extensions, staying in place can be a practical and cost-effective option.

When It Makes Sense to Move Out

For larger or more complex renovations, moving out, even temporarily, is often the better choice.

This is typically the case when:

  • Structural work is involved

  • Kitchens or bathrooms are being relocated or removed

  • There are safety concerns, particularly for families with children

  • Access to key areas of the home is restricted

In these situations, trying to live on-site can slow down the build and add unnecessary stress.

What to Expect if You Stay

If you choose to remain in your home, it’s important to be realistic about the conditions. You can expect noise during working hours, dust and limited access to parts of the home, trades moving through shared spaces and requiring facilities and temporary interruptions to services.

Clear communication and planning are key to making this work - and a healthy dose of tolerance and patience.

Planning Ahead Makes the Difference

A well-planned renovation considers how the space will be used during construction and not just after it’s finished.

Understanding the building process early can help you prepare for each stage and make informed decisions.
